GEO: how your customers find you (or not) via ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini in 2026

SEO is not dead, it splits in two. Here is how to get cited inside AI-generated answers when your prospects ask ChatGPT instead of Google.

GEO: how your customers find you (or not) via ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini in 2026

A Swiss SME founder told us recently: "My son looks for a plumber on ChatGPT, not on Google." The story sounds anecdotal, but it captures a real shift. A growing share of commercial-intent searches now happens inside conversational interfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot.

For a Swiss SME, the question is no longer "will this happen?" but "am I cited when it happens?".

SEO is not dead, it splits in two

Google still dominates search in Switzerland (over 90 % market share on classic search, per StatCounter). But Google itself now serves AI Overviews at the top of results, which mechanically reduce clicks to regular websites. Several US and UK studies (Similarweb, BrightEdge, Ahrefs) document organic CTR drops of 15 to 35 % on informational queries since Overviews launched.

The practical consequence: SEO traffic no longer stands on its own. You now have to work two surfaces in parallel.

    • Classic SEO: rank well on the ten blue links. Still critical for transactional local queries ("electrician Lausanne", "hairdresser Vevey").
    • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): get cited inside the answer generated when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini "which provider would you recommend?" or "compare these three options".

Two distinct games, with only partially overlapping rules.

How ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini build their answers

Each engine has its own plumbing, but the general pattern is the same.

    1. The model rewrites the user question into one or several search queries.
    2. A retrieval module fetches 5 to 20 pages (Bing for ChatGPT and Copilot, Brave Search for Claude, proprietary indexes for Google/Gemini and Perplexity).
    3. The model reads those pages, extracts what directly answers the question, and produces a synthesized answer with source citations.

Three immediate consequences for an SME.

    • Google Search Console is still the foundation. Without a submitted sitemap, clean indexation and exploited search data, no engine (Google, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) can properly discover you. This is the first brick to secure before any GEO work.
    • A citation is worth more than a click. Being mentioned by name inside a ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity answer builds recall even without an immediate click.
    • Page structure matters more than ever. A short paragraph directly answering a specific question is far more likely to be extracted than a wall of marketing prose.

What changes for a Swiss SME

For a tradesman, a consulting firm or a local e-commerce, four effects stack up.

The funnel gets shorter. A prospect asking ChatGPT or Claude "which marketing agency would you recommend for a 15-person SME in Lausanne?" gets three to five names. If yours is not there, you simply do not exist in that conversation. You do not even get compared.

The local long tail becomes strategic. AIs are strong on very specific questions: "best landscaper for a sloped garden in Valais" or "accountant specialised in restaurants in Vaud". These are exactly the questions your customers ask before they call you.

Third-party reviews and mentions gain weight. A Tribune de Genève article that names you, a Google Business Profile with 30 recent reviews, a LinkedIn post from a satisfied client: all of this feeds the models.

Playbook and checklist content performs strongly. AIs love to extract steps, lists and definitions. An article titled "5 mistakes to avoid before renovating a Swiss villa" is more likely to be cited than an "Our values" page.

GEO: 6 concrete levers to activate

Here is what we put in place at Birdy to make our clients citable by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. None of these levers is revolutionary, but the compound effect matters.

    1. Solidify your Google Search Console

This is the foundation you cannot skip: submit the sitemap, verify that all key pages are indexed, fix coverage errors, exploit the query reports. Google Search Console is still the most reliable source to understand what is seen (or not) on your site, and LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) all rely, directly or indirectly, on indexes that overlap with Google's. As a bonus, submitting the sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools as well remains useful for ChatGPT and Copilot which use the Bing index.

    2. Structure pages as Q&A

Every important page should include an FAQ section with 4 to 8 real questions asked by your prospects, and short answers (50 to 120 words). Using Schema.org FAQPage markup reinforces extraction, a format ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini pick up first.

    3. Publish an llms.txt file at the site root

An open format proposed in late 2024, now followed by several AI crawlers (GPTBot from OpenAI for ChatGPT, ClaudeBot from Anthropic for Claude, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended for Gemini). It lists the site's priority URLs in a format models can parse quickly. A well-built file guides what AIs read first.

    4. Create comparative and local content

Articles like "X vs Y", "top 5 in Switzerland", "2026 guide to…". These are the most reused formats by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini in their answers, because they match how people phrase their questions to an AI.

    5. Take E-E-A-T seriously (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust)

Clear author name, photo, credible bio, visible publication and update dates. An article signed "The team" on a site without a detailed "About" page is massively deprioritised, by both Google and by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini.

    6. Cultivate external mentions

Local press, industry associations, podcasts, interviews: every external mention reinforces the "this company exists and is recognised" signal. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini aggregate all these signals.

How to measure your presence inside LLMs

This is the youngest and therefore most imperfect part. Three approaches you can use today.

    • Test manually, once a month. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, ask 10 to 15 typical prospect questions, log who is cited and where. A spreadsheet is enough to start.
    • Dedicated tools like Peec.ai, Otterly, Profound or Scrunch: they automate this tracking with a dashboard. Budget 100 to 500 CHF per month depending on volume.
    • Analyse server logs to spot AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended). If they visit regularly, your site is on their radar.

The real KPI stays business: "how many prospects tell us they found us via ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity?". Adding that question to the contact form is enough to triangulate.

    Where to start this week

If you only do three things before Friday:

    1. Check your Google Search Console: sitemap submitted, key pages indexed, coverage errors fixed (and submit the sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools while you are at it).
    2. Add structured FAQ blocks on your three most important pages, with questions actually asked by prospects.
    3. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, ask 10 questions a typical customer would ask, and write down where you are cited, where you are not, and who beat you to it.

Those three actions cost nothing but a few hours. They are enough to reveal whether your site is still on the right track, or whether serious catch-up is overdue.

GEO is not just another buzzword. It is the logical extension of what SEO has been trying to do for 20 years: be found the exact moment someone is looking for what you sell. The 2026 twist is that half of those "moments" now happen inside a conversation with ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini, with no results page to scroll.

    Might as well be there.
